As today’s blog theme from the Ultimate Blog Challenge, I thought I would share one of my favorite (and very old) quotes, “Do What Makes You Happy”. But if you’re already happy, then do what makes you happier! LOL Now you can do things that make you happy, but you can also get carried away with self-gratification that may make you feel happy for a brief time, but what’s really important is true happiness ALL the time. Just wanted to point that out. With a world full of self-gratification, it’s easy to fall prey to things that are temporary, leaving us feeling empty…not happy.
I could go a lot of directions explaining what makes me happy, but I’m going to focus specifically on what it means to me in my business. There was a time when I first started out in my business back in 2004 that the idea of being a solopreneur had me excited and when I went full-time, I was elated (Not to mention I was scared and nervous all rolled up into one emotion!). I would say for the first few years, every new opportunity or client meant more money in my pocket and that made me happy. But the happiness can fade. Over the last couple of years, I found myself feeling bored and uninterested in even marketing my business and had in my mind at least once or twice that maybe I should just go back and work an outside job, even if it was part-time, I guess. Then I would remind myself that if I attempted to return to the outside job force, there is a chance I may not be hired right away or I’m not going to enjoy it since I’ve been working alone for so many years. At least I still had clients and I was still bringing in an income, and I didn’t have to worry about looking for an office job right away. Besides, I love the flexibility of not being chained to my desk, doing the same thing day in and day out.
Fast-forward to today…I’m starting to feel that same kind of happiness and excitement that I did so many years ago when I first started out. So where do I go from here? I’ll be working in a new level of services, programs and training that will build up my business moving forward. If I could do it back then, I can do it again now. I’m going to do what makes ME happy and have some fun doing it too!

It happens right? Sometimes we are caught up with what other people would say – we get affected with their opinions and comments but in reality it’s easy for them to give their two cents because they are not the one who is living the life or the person who will take the action but yourself. This quote is a wake up call. Let’s not define ourselves with what other people think about us.
Well said, Abigail! Do what makes you happy, but don’t let others persuade you otherwise.
That’s a terrific quote to follow!
Thank you, Martha!
I think you make an important distinction between temporary, self-gratification happiness and long-term real happiness. I think we’re all guilty of it. I know I am.
I’m right there with you, Jen. I can’t judge if I’ve been there myself.
